A Walk Among the Giants
Within the depths of the forest, in the silence of nature's heart – her core- I sat upon a bench nestled along a spiral path. The air cool and moist with lush green ground cover grew to the base of the tall coastal redwoods of Muir Woods.
A few moments upon this hidden seat offered time for presence and connection with the tree families surrounding us. Seated amongst these nearly 250 foot tall giants with many being around 1000 years of age had me thinking about all their shared ancient and somewhat hidden knowledge.
The trails were covered in wooden plank pathways leading to a number of short bridges that covered streams where at certain times of the year salmon could be found and other native friends. The first part of the walkway barely a sound was heard as our footsteps guided us deeper into the forest. Then birds from high above began offering clear greetings to us.
Near a café above the grounds brought an understanding that we were amongst a space unlike many. A very pristine environment that held nature beings and the creatures whose habitat we walked within in a much higher esteem.
• Two signs, the first stating that no scents or lotions be used within the park boundaries due to the highly sensitive native inhabitants’ sense of smell in this untouched, clean park.
• The second to help maintain the sensitive environment no food or drinks to be moved beyond a certain point into the forested area. Both a part of the leave no trace program for the health of the land.
Visitors, people with park permits, and others must have a parking reservation for the day they are wanting to visit. Parking is very limited. Pets are not allowed within the main park.
Located close to Sausalito, San Francisco, and the Golden Gate Bridge, may you have the opportunity to visit with these amazing giants.
